About two months ago I quit my corporate job at one of the world’s leading tech companies to pursue my dream of work & travel.
Upon graduating for my master degree in Marketing Management back in July 2015, I took off on a two-month backpacking trip to South America dedicated to become a professional travel blogger – an InMail from a LinkedIn recruiter changed my life and before I knew it, I moved to Dublin to start my career in tech.
I’ve had two incredible years working for – undoubtedly – one of the most amazing companies one can work for. With great perks & benefits (read: in-office massages + a rooftop barista bar), free food & gym, a competitive salary, the most beautiful new office – and most of all, an inspiring work culture and amazing colleagues.
But, after two years, the travel bug was itching and I felt it was the right time to make a move. So, I quit my secure corporate job and decided to make the leap. Hereby, I’d like to share my story of transformation with you.
1. Dream big – what would you do if you weren’t afraid? This quote by Sheryl Sandberg stuck by me since reading Lean In and encouraged me to dream big. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in digital marketing, and eventually to work for myself and be location-independent so I can work from wherever I want. Answering this question helped me realise what I ultimately wanted to achieve.
2. Set objectives – What does success look like for you? I believe it is important to work towards a 5-year plan and break down your long-term goal into smaller, achievable objectives. For me, my first step to achieve my big dream was to learn relevant skills and surround myself with like-minded people. So, I booked a one-month trip to Bali and completed online courses (of course, with LinkedIn Learning!) while working from a co-working space.
3. Make the Leap – And then comes the scary part (and what holds most people back from chasing their dreams) – it’s time to make the leap. I can tell you, it is darn scary to leave your comfort zone and secure high-paying corporate job, however in order to achieve your dreams we have to overcome fear and embrace the unknown. Be bold, Take risks, Make the Leap.
4. Rise to the Challenge – There is no way in the world that you’re going to be super comfy right after making the leap to chase your dream goals. You’re probably going to feel uncomfortable and fail – more than once. My first week in Bali, I was having a minor “nervous breakdown” – did I make the right decision? What if I fail? However, I’ve learned to accept failure and embrace uncertainty. Change your mindset to see discomfort and failure as an investment in a better version of you.
“There is no such thing as a wrong path or failure. It all happens to bring you to a different direction.” (Oprah Winfrey)
5. Endure the Crucible – Once you’ve learned to embrace failure, it is time to work hard and keep faith. Identify the skills you need to (further) develop. Take (online) learning courses. Build meaningful relationships. Practice and ask for feedback. And, invest in yourself – believe me, it is the best investment you will ever make.
6. Achieve Mastery – Two months after I left the corporate world, I am now working as a freelance digital marketing consultant and secured my first client within one month of my new location-independent lifestyle. I’ve worked from co-working spaces and cafes in Bali, Amsterdam, Dublin and tomorrow I’m leaving for Porto – I can without a doubt say that while you’re going through your journey of transformation, you will create a new and better you.
